Benriach 10 - The Original Ten
Welcome, Whisky Centurions, to a journey into the world of Benriach, where tradition meets innovation in a harmonious blend known as The Original Ten. This single malt expression encapsulates the essence of Speyside craftsmanship, offering a tantalising experience for the seasoned aficionados as well as newcomers.
Bottle
Benriach's collection features bottles of a timeless design—sturdy and broad, proudly displaying embossed initials on the shoulder. These bottles offer ample space to appreciate the golden elixir within. The label seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with classic charm, providing a visual preview of the experience awaiting your first sip.
Colour
In the realm of whisky, the hue of Benriach's expressions is a quintessential amber-gold, nestled perfectly near the middle of the spectrum of colours prevalent in the whisky world. This classic colouring is a result of aging in a fusion of bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak casks, each contributing to the rich and inviting tone.
Nose - The aroma of this expression is moderately inviting, with subtle hints of orchard fruits, a touch of vanilla, and a light maltiness. While the nose is pleasant, it lacks the complexity and depth found in more distinguished whiskies.
Palate - The palate unfolds with a straightforward sweetness, reminiscent of honey and ripe apples. There's a gentle interplay of oak and malt, providing a foundation for the tasting experience. However, the flavors, while enjoyable, lack the robustness and intricacy that elevate a whisky to exceptional status.
Finish - The finish is moderate, with lingering notes of oak and a faint spice. It's a respectable conclusion, yet it doesn't leave a lasting impression. The lack of distinctive elements in the finish contributes to the overall sense of the whisky being comfortably average.
Overall
Available for less than £40, the Original Ten is a steady and approachable choice for those seeking a reliable dram outside of high street names. While it doesn't boast the complexity or unique characteristics that set apart exceptional whiskies, it offers a straightforward and pleasant experience suitable for everyday enjoyment.

Fancy another dram?

Benromach 10 Year Old
Sometimes a whisky takes you by surprise. I thought I had Speyside figured out — sweet and fruit-forward — but Benromach 10 is a throwback to an older, increasingly rare style of the region. Toffee apple and sherried dried fruit meet a lovely oily texture and a whisper of smoke, finishing dry and gently spiced. Classic Speyside with a characterful twist — and a real bargain.

Benriach 12 Year Old - The Twelve
Benriach is one of the rare Speyside distilleries making both peated and unpeated spirit. Today it's 'The Twelve', their unpeated core expression. Rich maple syrup and a floral lift lead to torched orange, honey and gentle malt, before a long finish punctuated with pepper and ginger. A quietly confident, classic sherried Speysider in a crowded category — does it stand out?

Tamdhu 12 Year Old
Greetings, fellow Centurions! This week we explore Tamdhu 12 Year Old. From a quaint but resilient distillery established in 1896, Tamdhu quietly forged its legacy before being embraced by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2011 — rising from a period of closure under new stewardship, with a distinct bottle shape that stands out from the crowded Speyside marketplace.
