Fettercairn 12 Year Old
There's something enchanting about Fettercairn's 12 year old whisky that has captivated me for as long as I can remember. It's like being drawn to a treasure, akin to Gollum's obsession in Lord of the Rings, albeit in a more wholesome manner! And speaking of magic, the distillery's unusual emblem — an elegant unicorn — proudly emblazoned on the bottle, adds to its allure. It is said to represent purity and strength, which bodes well for the whisky.
Bottle
Let's talk about the bottle itself — a true work of art for its price point. From the intricate debossing on the neck to the gracefully tapered silhouette leading to a chunky base, every detail exudes elegance. The label, adorned with embossed letters and the age statement, oozes class. And let's not forget the pièce de résistance — the majestic unicorn's head, proudly displayed above the label, adding a touch of mystique to the experience.
Colour
The whisky boasts a light yet inviting hue, reminiscent of amber transitioning to a rich gold. While it's worth noting that some colourants have been added, it's a minor blemish on an otherwise exquisite presentation.
Nose - Prepare to be transported by the whisky's tantalising aroma — a symphony of sweetness with hints of tropical fruits and citrus dancing on the senses. And if that's not enough to entice you, the delicate scent of toffee or perhaps even my favourite — custard — will surely seal the deal.
Palate - The first sip is delightful — a velvety smooth texture envelops the palate, accompanied by flavours that echo the nose. Tropical fruits take center stage, mingling with gentle spices like a subtle touch of ginger, all underscored by the warmth of mellow vanilla.
Finish - As the journey comes to an end, the medium finish leaves a lingering impression of oak, gracefully fading as the sweetness wanes, inviting you to savor the moment just a little longer.
Overall
While sweetness abounds in this whisky, it never overwhelms, striking a harmonious balance that delights the senses. Paired with the exquisite bottle design, Fettercairn's 12 year old is more than just a whisky — it's an experience. And isn't that what enjoying whisky is all about? While there may be “better” 12 year old whiskies at similar (or lower) price points, few can rival the allure of this gem. So why not add a touch of magic to your whisky shelf?

Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old
Nestled along the River Dee in the Highlands, Royal Lochnagar is the smallest distillery by volume in Diageo's vast portfolio. Just a stone's throw from Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family's Scottish residence, it has a heritage dating back to the 1840s — its proximity to Balmoral made it the favoured whisky of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, earning its regal moniker.

Fettercairn 16 Year Old (4th Release: 2023)
I've a real soft spot for Fettercairn — they tread the line between classy and affordable rather well, and drew one of the biggest crowds at Whisky Live. The 16 is a step up, and a fine showcase of the distillery's signature tropical fruit: pineapple sweetness, stewed orchard fruit and a long finish of winter berries and ginger. Little wonder it's since joined the core range.

Royal Brackla 12 Year Old
One glance tells you this is meant to be a 'fine' whisky — royal-blue foil, classy label, rich colour, all trading on a regal history out on the Cawdor Estate. Royal Brackla has the look, and the 12 has the depth too: Christmas-pudding dried fruit, syrupy plum and cherry, warm spice and a touch of chocolate. But at nearly £70, does it back up the price?
