The ‘First Ten’ of the Whisky Centurion Journey
I recently set out on the quest to become a Whisky Centurion, a journey to sample and savour one hundred distinct whiskies (read more about that here). Now the first leg of this flavourful journey is complete and it has been nothing short of enchanting.
The first ten whiskies have been a diverse tapestry of aromas, flavours, and experiences, each bottle unraveling a unique chapter in the world of whisky. Here's a glimpse into the delightful array that has graced my palate so far.
Aberlour 12 Year Old
The journey began with the classic Aberlour 12, a Speyside gem that laid the foundation with its rich and nuanced profile. Its warm embrace set the tempo for the adventures that awaited.
Auchentoshan Three Wood
Transitioning to the Auchentoshan Three Wood brought a symphony of flavors—a dance of bourbon, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez casks, showcasing the Lowland finesse in a triple-distilled form.
Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair
The maritime allure of Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair greeted my senses, offering a captivating experience with its maritime influence and a complexity that hinted at Islay's rugged charm.
Benriach 10 - The Original Ten
Benriach's Original Ten introduced me to the Speyside distillery's character, blending bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak casks to create a harmonious expression of fruity and malted goodness.
Macallan 12 Year Old: Double Cask
The Macallan 12, with its Double Cask maturation, elevated the tasting journey with its signature sherried elegance—a true testament to the artistry of this revered distillery (even if it is over-priced in my opinion).
Ledaig - Sinclair Series, Rioja Cask
Ledaig's Rioja Finish brought a delightful twist with its marriage of peat and Rioja wine casks. The result was a captivating union of smokiness and fruity notes, showcasing the Isle of Mull's ingenuity.
Cragganmore 12 Year Old
The Cragganmore 12 unfolded the elegance of Speyside, revealing layers of honeyed sweetness, malt, and a light touch of smoke—a journey into the heart of this classic distillery.
Ardbeg 10 Year Old
Ardbeg 10 whisked me away to the peat-laden shores of Islay, a symphony of maritime notes and robust peat smoke — an exploration of the bold and untamed.
Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old
Royal Lochnagar's 12-year-old expression, nestled near Balmoral Castle, enchanted with its regal touch — a glimpse into the Highlands with a balance of sweetness and richness.
Aberlour Casg Annamh
As the journey reached a milestone with Aberlour's Casg Annamh, the Rare Cask series proved to be a crowning jewel — a tapestry of dried fruits, spices, and a long, lingering finish.
The first ten whiskies have set the stage for an immersive odyssey, and with each sip, I find myself edging closer to the coveted title of Whisky Centurion. The path ahead holds the promise of further discoveries, and I eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the next chapter in this spirited adventure.
I already find myself learning more as I compare these whiskies. If you are thinking of starting your Whisky Centurion journey be sure to let me know how you’re getting on in the comments.
Cheers!
